What is BA LLB?
BA LLB is a five-year integrated undergraduate law programme that combines legal education with subjects from the humanities and social sciences. A student normally studies the two areas together instead of completing a separate bachelor's degree followed by a three-year LL.B.
The exact curriculum differs between universities. CLAT 2026 university brochures, for example, describe integrated programmes containing law subjects alongside areas such as Economics, English, History, Political Science and Sociology.
The course is particularly useful for students who want to understand both law and the social, political and economic context in which laws operate.
ELIGIBILITY
Who can do BA LLB after Class 12?
Any stream can be relevant
Unlike MBBS or many engineering routes, BA LLB does not generally require Physics, Chemistry or Mathematics. Students from Arts, Commerce and Science backgrounds can apply, subject to the rules of the particular university or entrance examination.
Minimum marks vary
Many institutions prescribe a minimum Class 12 percentage. The exact requirement, category relaxation and whether appearing candidates can apply must be checked in the current admission notification.
Important: Do not assume that one law college's eligibility applies to every law college. Read the current prospectus of the institution and entrance exam you are targeting.
MAIN NATIONAL ROUTE
CLAT for BA LLB
The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) is the major national entrance route for undergraduate admission to participating National Law Universities (NLUs). The Consortium's 2026 counselling instructions state that the process covers five-year integrated undergraduate programmes at participating NLUs.
CLAT is not simply a test of legal knowledge. Students preparing for it need strong reading comprehension, current affairs/general knowledge, logical reasoning, legal reasoning and quantitative techniques according to the current examination framework.
Class 11–12 → CLAT preparation → CLAT UG → rank → NLU counselling → seat allotment → BA LLB
Do you need to study law before CLAT? No. The undergraduate exam is designed for students entering law after school; preparation is more about reading, reasoning, comprehension, awareness and disciplined practice than memorising a law degree syllabus.
ANOTHER IMPORTANT EXAM
AILET and NLU Delhi
AILET (All India Law Entrance Test) is associated with National Law University Delhi's undergraduate law admissions. It is important to keep AILET separate from CLAT: an exam route accepted by one institution is not automatically accepted by every law university.
Students targeting NLU Delhi should follow the university's own current admission notification, examination information and counselling instructions for their admission year.
Smart strategy: If your target colleges use different entrance examinations, make a calendar before Class 12 ends. Missing an application deadline can eliminate an otherwise strong opportunity.

WHAT WILL YOU STUDY?
BA LLB subjects and curriculum
Law subjects
Constitutional Law, Contract Law, Criminal Law, Family Law, Property Law, Administrative Law, Company/Corporate Law and other legal areas, depending on the university.
Humanities & social sciences
Political Science, History, Economics, Sociology, English and related subjects can form the BA component.
Practical legal learning
Moot courts, drafting, legal research, seminars, internships, clinical courses and other practical activities can connect classroom learning with real legal work.
Do not judge a BA LLB course only by the title. Download the curriculum of the colleges you are considering and compare what you will actually study.
CHOOSING A COLLEGE
How to choose the right law college
Recognition & approval
Verify the legal education status and current institutional information through authoritative sources before taking admission.
Faculty & academics
Look at faculty strength, research culture, academic workload and the quality of legal education.
Internships
Law is strongly practical. Check whether students have meaningful access to courts, chambers, law firms, companies, NGOs and other legal organisations.
Moot court culture
Moot courts, debates, research and writing can develop advocacy and analytical skills.
Placements
Read official placement information carefully. Look at the number of students placed, median/typical outcomes and the kinds of recruiters—not just the highest package.
Total cost
Compare tuition, hostel, mess, books, travel, deposits, examination fees and other charges over five years.
FEES
How much does BA LLB cost?
BA LLB fees vary widely. Government institutions, NLUs, private universities and other colleges can have very different fee structures. A low first-year tuition figure does not necessarily mean a low five-year cost.
Before accepting a seat, calculate tuition + hostel + mess + examination/university charges + books + laptop + travel + deposits + other officially notified costs.
Fee safety rule: Pay through the official admission channel and preserve every receipt. Never pay an unofficial person for a “guaranteed law seat”.
THE FIVE-YEAR JOURNEY
What is life like during BA LLB?
Year 1Build foundations in humanities, legal methods, communication and introductory law.
Years 2–3Study core legal subjects while developing research, writing, reasoning and advocacy skills.
Year 4Explore advanced and elective areas, internships, competitions and possible career specialisations.
Year 5Complete advanced study, practical/clinical work, internships and graduation requirements.
Reality check: Reading is a major part of law school. If you dislike reading long cases, statutes, judgments, articles and arguments, law may feel much harder than it looks from the outside.
CAREER OPTIONS
What can you do after BA LLB?
Advocacy
Work toward practising as an advocate by following the applicable enrolment, examination and professional requirements.
Law firms
Corporate, commercial, dispute-resolution, banking, technology, tax and other legal practices recruit law graduates for different roles.
Corporate legal teams
Companies need lawyers and legal professionals for contracts, compliance, governance, disputes and business transactions.
Government & public service
Law graduates can explore competitive examinations, government legal roles and public-sector opportunities subject to the relevant eligibility rules.
Judiciary
Judicial-service examinations and eligibility rules vary by state and can change. Check the relevant state notification.
Higher studies & research
LL.M., research, teaching and specialised legal education are options for students who want deeper academic or subject expertise.
BECOMING AN ADVOCATE
Does BA LLB automatically make you a practising lawyer?
No. Completing BA LLB gives you the law degree, but professional practice as an advocate involves additional statutory and professional requirements. Students should verify the current rules of the Bar Council of India and the relevant State Bar Council, including applicable enrolment and examination requirements.
This distinction is important: law graduate, advocate, legal professional and judicial officer are not interchangeable terms.
SKILLS THAT MATTER
What should a good law student develop?
Reading: Learn to read carefully and identify the central issue.
Writing: Legal writing should be clear, structured and supported by authority.
Reasoning: Learn to distinguish facts, assumptions, evidence and conclusions.
Communication: Speaking confidently matters, but listening is equally important.
Research: Learn how to find reliable statutes, judgments, regulations and secondary sources.
Ethics: Legal work carries professional responsibilities. A good lawyer is not simply a good debater.

STUDENT QUESTIONS
Frequently asked questions
Can I do BA LLB after Class 12 from Science or Commerce?
Yes. BA LLB is generally open to students from different Class 12 streams, subject to the particular institution's eligibility rules.
Is CLAT compulsory for BA LLB?
No. CLAT is a major national route, but not every BA LLB institution uses CLAT. Some institutions use AILET, their own entrance examination, state processes or other admission methods.
Is BA LLB better than doing a normal BA and then LL.B.?
They are different pathways. BA LLB integrates both degrees into a five-year programme after Class 12, while the traditional route involves completing a bachelor's degree first and then a three-year LL.B. Choose based on your timeline, interests and target institutions.

No. You are entering undergraduate law. Preparation focuses heavily on reading comprehension, reasoning, current affairs/general knowledge, legal reasoning and quantitative skills according to the current exam pattern.
Is a high salary guaranteed after BA LLB?
No. Outcomes vary significantly by college, skills, internships, specialisation, recruiter and individual performance. Do not choose law solely on the basis of advertised salary figures.
Where should I verify current admission rules?
Use the official Consortium of NLUs for CLAT, the relevant university for its own entrance process, and authoritative professional/regulatory sources for legal education and practice requirements.
