ENGINEERING ENTRANCE • PATHFINDER GUIDE

JEE Main & JEE Advanced

A clear roadmap for students who want admission to engineering and related undergraduate programmes through one of India’s most important entrance-examination pathways.

What is JEE?

Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is the major national-level engineering entrance pathway in India. JEE Main is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). The JEE Advanced examination is conducted by the IIT system through the designated organising IIT and is the examination used for admission to IIT undergraduate programmes.

For a student, the easiest way to understand the pathway is:

1Study Class 11–12 PCM thoroughly
2Appear for JEE Main
3Use the JEE Main result for NIT/IIIT/other admissions and, when eligible, for JEE Advanced
4Appear for JEE Advanced for the IIT pathway
5Participate in the relevant seat-allocation process

Important: Dates, eligibility rules, qualifying cut-offs, fees and admission procedures can change from one examination year to another. Always verify the current year’s official information bulletin before applying.

Eligibility: what students should check

For JEE Main

JEE Main eligibility is governed by the NTA information bulletin for the relevant year. Students should check the accepted qualifying examinations, subject requirements, year-of-passing conditions, nationality/category rules and any programme-specific conditions before applying.

For JEE Advanced

JEE Advanced has additional conditions. For 2026, a candidate must meet all applicable criteria, including being among the top 2,50,000 successful candidates in the JEE Main 2026 B.E./B.Tech. paper, satisfying the age criterion, the attempt condition and the Class XII first-appearance condition with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. citeturn610789search0

Class XII subjects

For the IIT route, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics are central subjects and the exact qualifying rules must be checked in the current JEE Advanced brochure.

Category documents

Keep category, PwD and other applicable certificates ready in the format and validity required by the current authority.

Age & attempts

Do not rely on old coaching material for these rules. The official examination brochure controls eligibility.

Exam pattern and question style

JEE Main and JEE Advanced both test Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, but they are designed differently.

JEE Main

Designed as a high-volume national entrance examination with computer-based testing. The exact question counts, marking scheme and session details should be read from the current NTA bulletin.

JEE Advanced

JEE Advanced 2026 has two compulsory papers of three hours each. Each paper contains Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics sections, and the examination tests comprehension, reasoning and analytical ability. The marking scheme can vary by question type and is provided in the examination instructions. citeturn979794search14turn979794search15

Exam-day rule: Always read the instructions shown on the examination screen/question paper because the exact marking details are year-specific.

What should you study?

The heart of JEE preparation is not memorising isolated formulas. You need strong command of the Class 11 and 12 concepts listed in the official syllabus and the ability to apply them under time pressure.

01

Physics

Build concepts first, then practise progressively harder numerical problems. Mechanics, electricity, magnetism, modern physics and other prescribed units need repeated revision.

02

Chemistry

Combine conceptual understanding, numerical practice and systematic revision of inorganic and organic facts and reactions.

03

Mathematics

Develop algebraic fluency, coordinate geometry, calculus, vectors/3D and other prescribed topics through timed problem solving.

How to prepare for JEE effectively

Phase 1 — Build the baseComplete concepts chapter by chapter. Keep a short formula and mistake notebook.
Phase 2 — Strengthen applicationSolve standard problems, then mixed-concept questions. Do not skip weak chapters.
Phase 3 — Exam practiceTake timed tests. After each test, analyse incorrect, guessed, slow and unattempted questions.
Phase 4 — RevisionRevise from your own notes, formula sheets, error log and previously attempted questions rather than endlessly starting new books.

A practical daily cycle

Learn → understand one concept properly
Practise → solve questions without immediately checking the solution
Review → identify why an answer went wrong
Revise → return to weak topics after a planned gap

What happens after JEE?

Your examination score is only one part of the admission journey. After results, students should carefully follow the counselling and seat-allocation process applicable to the institutes they are targeting.

JoSAA pathway

For participating IITs, NITs, IIITs and other institutions covered by the joint counselling framework, students use the applicable JoSAA process and later processes where relevant.

Choice filling

Do not rank branches only by popularity. Compare curriculum, institute, fees, location, campus opportunities and your own interests.

Other institutes

Some universities and institutes may have their own admission rules or may consider JEE Main scores under their published criteria. Check each institution separately.

What can you study after JEE?

The JEE pathway can open routes into engineering and technology programmes, but the best choice is the one that matches your interests and long-term goals.

  • Computer Science and Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Civil Engineering
  • Electronics and Communication Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Engineering Physics and related programmes
  • Other institute-specific B.Tech., B.E., dual-degree and integrated programmes

Before selecting a branch, look beyond the branch name. Read the actual curriculum and understand what you will study for four or more years.
